Kalbak-Tash IV/VI (A-25)

Description

It is a vertical inscription consisting of 2 lines; it is situated in the upper part of plane I. V.M. Nadeljaev considered the 2 lines as separate inscriptions and gave them separate numbers 4 and 6, but in the comments, he took the possibility of uniting the 2 lines into one inscription into consideration. The upper part of the first line and the second line got number 4, the lower part if the first line was numbered as 6 (Nadeljaev 1984: 98). I. L. Kyzlasov considers that the first line should get divided between two different inscriptions; and the second line consisting of 3 runes is the continuation of the same inscription. In order not to get misled, Kyzlasov proposed to number the first line as , and the sendond line as 4 (Kyzlasov 2002: 75).

The first line, Kalbak-Tash VI, is 24,2cm long, it consists of 14 signs. The second line, Kalbak-Tash IV, has 3 signs, it is 4,5cm long. The height of the characters is 1,2–4,3cm.

First inscription

Translation: Think of your possessions, armament (lit.: of arrows), place of habitat (of nomadization?), animals (lit.: horse), treasures, house. ).

Second inscription

Transliteration: j¹ γ z r²

Transcription: Jaγïz-Är

Translation: Yagyz-Er (A proper name, lit.: ‛Brown man’)

Translation:

Oh, brown earth - that should be called my holy earth.

Comments

The word yеr ‘earth’ never loses its  first consinant. On the other hand, the adjective yagïz ‘brown’ is normally used in composition with yer as its attribute: yagїz yer. Probably, it was a spelling mistake.

Comments

1. The inscription is unclear.

2. The sign z/d² is more lokely tob e d².

3. The sign n¹/U can have 2 interpretations: as n¹ or the inverted U.

4. y¹ g¹ d² is met also in other fragments here; therefore its most likely reading could be g¹ z/d². y(a)g(ï)z (ä)r is a possible reading, but it does not give any clear sense, the rest is also unclear.

5. b² A is encountered also in other fragments of this plane..
